What is a balanced diet?

Simply, a balanced diet is one which includes a sufficient variety of foods and drinks, in appropriate amounts, to provide the energy and nutrients needed for health. Key nutrients are vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, and all of these have numerous important roles in the body. A healthy balanced diet is also one which allows a person to maintain a healthy weight.

There are various recommendations for and models of balanced diets, with Public Health England giving specific recommendations for the UK. Generally, it’s advised to eat:

  • lots of fruits, vegetables and starchy carbohydrates (such as pasta, rice and potatoes)
  • a good amount of protein sources (including fish, pulses, beans and lean meat) and dairy (or non-dairy alternatives)
  • small amounts of high quality oils, such as olive oil
  • treat foods such as sweets, biscuits, crisps, chocolate, etc. infrequently

Within this, there is general advice to eat a wide variety of foods, to maximise the range of nutrients you consume. Of particular importance to us at Birds Eye are the very special roles role of vegetables and fish in a balanced diet.

The role of vegetables

Because they’re so healthy, we should aim to eat 5 portions a day of fruits and vegetables, and a healthy diet should be full of a variety of vegetables. Different vegetables contain different types and amounts of vitamins and minerals, while also providing fibre and other goodies, and vegetables are also a great source of colour and flavour in the diet.

The good news is that frozen vegetables are just as good nutritionally as fresh, as freezing locks in the goodness. We have a large variety of vegetables in our Birds Eye range, from plain natural vegetables such as our peas, steamfresh vegeables and fieldfresh vegetables.

They can be used to prepare delicious dishes like pea and ham soup and chicken and vegetable stir fry. To see our range of vegetable products, visit our vegetable section.

Increasing your fish consumption

We all need to make sure we eat enough good quality protein to stay healthy, as protein is required for the growth, maintenance and repair of our bodies, and our Birds Eye fish products are a great source of protein. It’s recommended that we eat fish at least twice a week, including one portion of oily fish, and we’re here to help with our varied range of fish products. Our favourites include omega 3 fish fingers, cod fish fingers and battered cod fillets. And remember, frozen fish is just as good nutritionally as fresh!
